the season for thunderstorms, flashfloods, and haboobs. it used to be that monsoon began after the third consecutive day of dew points above 55 degrees, but from now on the national weather service has pompously decided that it's going to be from june 15th until september 30th. "they did this simply to take the focus off whether or not a storm was considered a monsoon storm or not, and have people be more concerned with safety."*
uh, what the ?
at first i was a little offended by this statement. are they insinuating that i might be some sort of a bonehead or a nitwit perhaps? i don't find myself sitting around in a flash flood saying, hmm, is this a monsoon storm or should i get myself to higher ground. nor have i ever been flying a kite on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wondering is the wind blowing in from the sea of cortez or should i seek shelter? according to the national weather service and arizona legislature, some people do [something like that]. in arizona we even have what is called the "stupid motorist law" which allows municipalities and rescue agencies to charge people for the cost of being rescued. so if you do this:
not only do you get to be featured on tonight's evening news as the biggest horse's ass anyone has ever seen, you also get to literally pay for your stupidity.
i like it. there really should be more "stupid people laws". so i guess they're not insinuating anything, it's just cold, hard fact for some [many] people. just don't lump me into that same pool of incipience.
yesterday me and the boys finally got to see some warm, wet evidence that it is indeed monsoon. we went from swimming in the pool to frolicking in the summer rain. yeah, i know. i don't really frolick, but these guys do.
ah, to be a kid, frolicking in a monsoon thunderstorm while your mother encourages you in hopes of a fantastical photo opportunity. don't worry, there wasn't any sign of lightning [besides the loud clapping of thunder.] and if there was we'd know how close it was just by counting and just what to do [duck!].
enjoy the rain and cumulonimbus clouds this season and remember, be safe out there.

I LOVED monsoon season in AZ, it was my favorite part of living in the desert. There were always some people rowing their kayak down the street after a storm.
I learn so much from reading your blogs, Faith. And I also do miss the monsoon season. If there could be rain once a week during the official "season", summer would be much more tolerable in AZ!

Hey - we didn't get any rain yet! I saw the clouds, though. I'm prayin' for a good monsoon season - it's been too long since we had a good rainy summer.
