we pull up to the local tree lot and let the boys loose. as expected, they run directly to the tallest tree and declare the 20-foot fir, too tall for even the tent, their winner. joe and i smile and say, "sure, you got it." then i distract the boys and joe whisks away the one that i choose with a very discreet head tilt [very lassie-like]. the boys never even question it and it's a done deal in a matter of minutes. [they underestimate our sneakiness.]
we did learn one new lesson this year: don't trust the hippy salesman when he says the tree is tied securely to the roof of the car.
with a soundtrack of scritching and scratching, joe maneuvered driving the car and holding up the slack in the rope through the window, while the tree threatened to take flight. [thanks so much to all the concerned citizens honking and pointing their warnings.]
but all is well that ends well. our tree teetered its way home where me and the boys welcomed it with illumination, trimmings and a train full of endless entertainment.
