my two year old and i had the recent opportunity to spend 9 hours in banner desert's emergency room. after discovering an open bottle of flinstone vitamins and the evidence all over the culprit's face, i made a call to the poison control center. did you know that "an overdose of iron from vitamins is a leading cause of poisoning death in infants and children under the age of 6"? and since i couldn't be sure how many "candies" he devoured they suggested i take him in.
i thought he was fine, but nobody wants to be the mom whose child died because she didn't want to:
a] pack up 3* kids and all their necessary cargo at bedtime,
b] find a babysitter for the other two kids because her husband is MIA, [thanks dad and karen]
c] drive 30 miles to the hospital not knowing if there was enough gas in the car to make it there,
d] sit in the germ-infested waiting room for 2 hours with a tired and curious 2 year old,
e] entertain the i.v. ridden child for another 3 hours while they run tests and take x-rays,
f] try to sleep on a child-sized gurney with my son for the next 4 hours while he's being observed**, or
g] have their baby poked and prodded all night long just to find out that he was actually fine in the first place.
and aside from that extensive alphabetical list of reasons, nobody wants to be the mom who gets that look from all the nurses and doctors in the ER that asks that same question you're thinking right now.
and where were you when your child was eating vitamins out of the bottle for dinner?
the nurse that finally came to discharge us actually made me sign a paper that had an entire paragraph explaining that "ALL drugs should be kept out of Isaak's reach" before we could be released. perhaps the first six doctors and nurses that mentioned that to me didn't really think i believed them unless it was in writing. well, banner desert's ER doctors and nursing staff, here you go...
from me via the bureau of communication* this includes my niece
** i suspected all along that they were keeping us there just to teach me a lesson.

ooh. hmmm. cps?
though the situation was not so good, there are moments you can look back on with humor. right? oh, you're not there yet? you will be.
(the form is funny. how do you find these things? you're much better at the web surfing thing than I)
you never did say where you were...
I heard that poison control tracks how many times you call and then CPS will come get you if you call too much. Good luck.
Whew, what fun! Try to do better next time will ya?!
Cute post though, nothing like good material for a good post! Keep it up Ikey! ;)
We are living parallel lives. I feel your pain... I FEEL it.
Hi Faith!! I have enjoyed reading about your family. CUTE BOYS!! You look great and seem to be doing well. Sorry about the hospital visit I would have to agree with you 100% on the reasons you don't want to have to go!!! Keep in touch!!
The apology letter was too funny, very clever! poor poor Ikey had like 2 flinstone vitamins and spent the night at the hospital! Sorry mom sucks for you too! Better safe than sorry...
lol - how did you figure on 2? That's a good mom, Faith. Way to stay on the safe side. I would have done the same thing (w/out the 30 mile drive :P)
And, yes. The apology form letter is classic. :)
